What does the Automated Road Traffic Enforcement Centre do?

The Automated Road Traffic Enforcement Centre ("Centre automatisé de constatation des infractions routières" or "CACIR") is responsible for recording and processing road traffic offences detected by automatic traffic enforcement systems.

It operates as a national service, shared jointly by the French National Police and the Gendarmerie.

It receives information collected by traffic enforcement cameras via an encrypted network. The system automatically searches three databases: national registrations, hired vehicles, and changes of address filed with the Post Office. Contraventions are then sent to the vehicle owner by post.
